The American Dental Association has created informative videos called Ask the Dentist. Here is their video on: 'How Can I Help My Elderly Parent Brush Her Teeth?'
With the American population living longer, seniors' oral health has become an important issue, as has the widespread problem of elder abuse. Every year more than 2.5 million older Americans may be victims of elder abuse, and in some cases dentists serve as the first line of defense, according to a report in the May/June 2005 issue of General Dentistry, the clinical, peer-reviewed journal of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD). Not only do our bodies change as we age, but so do our teeth
and gums. There are years of wear and tear on our teeth that
can weaken or crack fillings; the residue from tobacco, tea,
or coffee consumption darkens teeth; and possible plaque
build-up can lead to bigger health problems. If you take
certain medications on a regular basis your saliva flow may
be greatly reduced which affects the health of your teeth.
We have products to help this side effect. It is important
to have regular check-ups to ensure gum disease or root
decay has not formed. We advise our seniors if their teeth
bleed easily from brushing or flossing or start to loosen,
to contact us immediately.
